newbie - need early guidance

HI all

I am very new to coding and although I know how things work and what you can do with code and visual design I don't really have experience!

I would like some very basic advise on what coding front end to look into i.e. c++, VB, Web etc.

I am interested in learning to develop a basic system for my cafe that would enable a customer to go through a graphical experience in building their coffee order. I would ideally like to create something that would work well IN the cafe via a touchscreen or on the Internet from their desktop.

Now this is only basic stuff I'm not looking to build a go to market system but just something that applies to my daily life while giving me something new and challenging to look into.

Any guidance would be much appreciated!

Alfo,

I'm glad to hear that you would like to educate yourself in designing / programming / implementing a website.
In my opinion it is this very early stage that is the most important.
It is in this stage that you decide exactly what it is that your site will do and how it will do it.

My advice is to sit down with a pencil and paper and decide on some of the following options:
Will users be required to:
1) Login / Register - if yes
a) before they begin the process of placing an order
b) if they try to place an order
2) How will you accept payment? Cash, credit cards, e-checks, paypal...
3) What are all of the other high level functionalities that you'd like your site to offer?

Regarding what language to use, I much prefer C# (no particular reason, VB.Net is also a great and simple language to use).
It will have no impact on how your site looks to your customers. This is something that is purely up to you.
I do however recommend 2 books (possibly 3 or 4) that will help you greatly in reducing your learning curve and aid you in applying new concepts / ideas in real life situations:
1) Beginning ASP.Net e-commerce in c#. I have the 2005 edition. I'm not sure if there is a newer version or not.
2) Beginning asp.Net in C#.
3) Any beginners SQL book.
4) Any book for HTML / CSS.

If you have any questions or would like any advice let me know.
I used the first 2 books to help me build my first .Net website (https://www.theproductpad.com) and am very greatful for the help that these books gave me.

Good luck,
Michael

thanks

i remember the days when I wrote basic code for ZX Spectrum but now im a little lost!!

I will look into the books.

Newbie -- Page_Load( ) fires twice if image is added to Login page

Hi,
I'm using Visual Studio 2005 + ASP.NET and C#
I have a login.aspx page with AutoEventWireup set to FALSE (also added to
top level Web.Config, and set to false)
With a "template" loginCtl the Page_Load( ) event fires once.
As soon as I add an ImageCtl or just drag an image using the designer, onto
the login page and then run it, I'm seeing the Page_Init( ) and Page_Load( )
functions being fired twice.
If I remove the image, then these methods are only fired once.
Any ideas?
I am setting the event delegate like this in my login.aspx.cs file:
protected override void OnInit( EventArgs e )
{
this.Load += new EventHandler( Page_Load );
}
protected void Page_Load( ... etc.
Thanks for any tips,
FrankThis isn't a direct answer, but I personally avoid that this.Load += new
EventHandler(Page_Load) stuff that the wizard puts in like the plague. The
reason being is that I subclass pages a lot, and when you depend on wiring
up events, you can run into issues where a subclass won't call the base
initializer, or the listeners get added in an order that prevents proper
handling (I'd have to dig up an example, but I had issues with Page_Load
never firing at all). Since you're overriding OnInit just to wire up an
event handler, I'd just override OnLoad and see if that might prevent the
double-hit (plus, you're plugging into the vtable instead of having to deal
with event firing/delegate calling)

Newbie - Problem Loading SLN files.

Hi All,

I am having a problem that is driving me crazy.

I have Windows 2000 Professional, Visual Studio Professional, IIS installed
and running...

I am reading ASP.NET Developer's JumpStart by Paul Sheriff and Ken Getz.
I've downloaded the examples and now want to try some of them out.

In VS, I go to the File Menu and Select, Open Solution. I go to the
directory that the installer put the book's files and select the SLN file.I
then get the following error:
Unable to get the project file from the Web Server. Unable to open Web
Project 'JumpStart/VBLanguage.' The Web 'JumpStart/VBLanguage' located
on server 'http://localhost/' does not exist.

In IIS, their is a virtual directory for JumpStart. I've tried creating one
for VBLanguage but I still am getting errors.

I then tried just opening the Project. I had to use a URL
(http://localhost/jumpstart/vblanguage/vblanguage.vbproj) and I can open it,
but I get the message: "You do not have permission to make changes to this
document. Do you want to open a read-only copy?"
I answer Yes, but I still get the error that it is unable to get the project
file from the Web Server.

I can't reproduce exactly what I did before, but at one point I think I made
my own Solution file and added everything, but I could not view any of the
pages in Design view.

I just want to learn this stuff. I've spent too long just trying to open a
file and no time reading and learning. It had been very frustrating (thanks
for letting me vent).

Thank you for any help you can provide.

-RobI think you need to contact either Paul Sheriff or Ken Getz for your answer.

Maybe, but I installed it on a different PC with no problems. So I figured
it was a Microsoft problem, not Paul Sherrif's or Ken Getz's.

Newbie : SMTP Problem

Hi,

I'm a newbie in programming. I have started working on ASP.Net this week. My OS is Windows XP Profesional. IIS 5.1, Visual Studio 2005. I am trying to build a simple user login system from the book "ASP.Net 2.0 Everyday Apps for DUMMIES". I followed every instruction written in the book. Everything is working well apart from sending email to the user while registering or changing password.

Can anyone help me please. Thanx in Advance,

Portion of webconfig file is below:

<system.net>
<mailSettings>
<smtp>
<network host="localhost" port="25" />
</smtp>

Hi,

If you are talking about debugging Classic ASP, it's a freakin nightmare.

If I were you, I wouldn't waste my time. Just fill your code full of
Response.Write()s ... that is actually a hell of a lot more effecient.

THANK GOD for .NET!!!

thanks for the reply
i have been using the response.write technique, but ran into some kind of
problem, i think because i executed
wscipt.createobject instead of server.createobject and then could not run
any asp! had to reboot, so was trying
to get around that
is it possible then to rewrite the old asp into asp.net and run that on my
win2k/iis5.0 server??

Newbie dynamic color question

I am trying to use Visual Studio to change the color of a cell on the page load. I am trying to do this in the code behind using VB. I can do a table:

MyTable.BackColor = Color.Red

But I can't seem to do a table cell. I have tried this:

MyTable.Rows(1).Cells(1).BackColor = Color.Blue

With this I get the error:

"Specified argument was out of the range of valid values. Parameter name: index "

I have tried inheriting the namespace "System.Drawing"
Can this be done, if so how? If not, how would I do this normally with VB?

ThanksThis means that the row or cell does not exist. Namely, the index of the first row in table is 0, not 1. Same goes for the cells.

So if you have only one row and only one cell, you get an error.

Try

MyTable.Rows(0).Cells(0).BackColor = Color.Blue

I looked back on it and adjusted my code to row 0 and cell 0. I can now get the row to change color, but regardless of what cell I call, it changes the entire row. I tried putting an entry for two cells in the same row, but it just ignores the anything after the first call. Any ideas?

Newbie layout question please help

I am new to ASP.NET, but not to ASP or Visual Basic.
I have read much of ASP.NET unleashed first addition. It all looks neat,
but I don't understand several things.

One thing in particular is that I laid out all of my controls on a form that
took a long time to set up--lots of fields. I did this with grid layout on.
So this makes absolute positioning, which is cool, but..

* If the user changes the browser text size the text overruns other items
* There is no way it seems to use a validation summary control or add
includeheaders to the top because it won't move the page down.

Am I missing something?

Do most people use the grid layout or not?

If I should use flow layout instead, then do I need to use tables and such
or does the IDE make them for me?

Also if I should have used flow layout, then how do I convert my existing
form to flow layout so that it will move it down for things above like the
validationsummary, etc.?

Are usercontrols, etc only good if you are in flow mode?

Please give me a general overview of this and how I should go about it.

Thanks,

ShaneI dislike grid layout.

The biggest problem, is that if you have dynamicly sized controls (e.g a
grid), you can't know in advance how much space you may need for it. A grid
may have 3 rows or 30. How do you know where to put the controls that are
supposed to go underneath it?

Another thing is that IE has issues with properly interpreting absolute
positioning under certain conditions.

To get proper layout, you can use tables, or whatever elements you require
to create your page.

To convert what you have now, change the form to FlowLayous. You will have
to redrag all your controls, in order for them to lose all the absolute
positioning information. So just select a control, and drag it elsewhere on
the form - that should do it. Alternatively, you can switch to HTML view,
and delete everything in they 'style' attribute of each control that refers
to its position.

I only use flow layout. Grid layout can be a real bear to work with and
absolute positioning is very tricky and not supported in older browsers.
The resizing thing you've discovered is another pain.

To convert to flow layout, just change the pageLayout property. I've
found that you sometimes need to slightly move each control after you
make the change to get it to snap to the new layout.

You'll need tables to align everything, just like in plain old HTML.

Thanks--my problems exactly,
but you could you explain to me if I should use panels or placeholders and
exatly what those are and how they work...

I am still vague on it all.

Thanks for everything...

Then what do you do to account for the issues I described below or do you
just not care if the user changes browser text size to Larger and everything
overlaps?

Why would anyone ever use grid layout if there is no flexibility of
flow--like growing and shrinking.
You couldn't use the validation summary control in this fashion or an
include at the top right?
Or do most people use frames to get around the header include issue?

I was wondering do sites like gotnet.com use grid layout or flowlayout to do
the neat stuff they have there?

I am also unclear on Panel and Placeholder controls--when do I use them and
how are they affected by the grid layout--I imagine they wouldn't grow or
shrink correctly.

Thanks in Advance,

Shane

Thanks Barry.

I am still wondering about Panel and Placeholder controls--do I just use
those in flow mode?

Also while I have someone to ask is there a simple way to reset tab order in
webforms--like there is in Win Forms?
I was having to go through one control after another--yuk.

Thanks in advance,

Both panels and placeholders aren't directly related to which type of layout
you want. They can be used in both for the same purpose.

Panels are basically used for grouping controls. That way if you want to
make a group of controls invisible, you can make the panel they are in
invisible, thus making everything inside it invisible. A Panel basically is
a 'div' tag once rendered in HTML.

A placeholder can be handy when you need to dynamically load controls into
specific locations.
For example, if you need to add a textbox at runtime, but you don't want to
add it to end of the Controls collection - but in a specific location in the
middle of the page. By adding it to the Controls collection of a
placeholder - you are basically just putting your textbox in the place
holder's place. The placeholder may have multiple controls in it.

But again, neitehr of these controls are directly related to the layout type
of the page.

Thanks Marina,

But if I put a panel on a grid layout and then hide--won't it still take up
the same amout of space and the other controls still be in there place??
i.e--leave a big empty hole... Thus making flow layout necessary?

Marina,

I seem to have problems with a very long, form.. It is nicely formating
using the grid layout.
Putting it into table mode would be a lot of reworking

For example, it is setup more like an adobe acrobat form

has fields and above each field, what is in the field. At present it is
nicely aligned unless someone decided to make their browser text bigger than
medium.

I wanted to move it all down, but there seems to be no easy way to do that
in the IDE.
I don't know how to get nice positioning without abs. positioning, but don'
t know how to get it flowing right with it.
I think maybe some pages benifit from grid layout--forms for example, and
other's don't..

Still trying to catch on. I have tried panels. I tried to just copy from
the form and past into a panel , but no luck.

Thanks...

Looks like there would be a site dealing with such issues...instead of just
code issues.

Newbie Microsoft VS.net Code Behind Problem

Hi!!
I am using ASP.net with Code Behind for the first time on Visual Studio. I had some problems and questions.
When we create a Web App Project in VS do i need to copy the resx file too?
Actually i made a page. It is now a .aspx file, a .aspx.vb and a .aspx.resx file. I also made a new class in a VB file. when i built the project i found the dll in the bin folder.
I uploaded the stuff onto the web page (all three, global.asax, web.config) and the dll into the bin folder of my websites root, but it doesnt work. I made some changes in my project and rebuilt it, but the changes werent reflected (i added a Response.Write in the Page_Load).
I copied the vb file to the sites root too but the thing doesnt work. Its working perfectly on my localhost.
I also wanted to know that i added the class in the file by choosing Add Class in the projects menu. So its automatically compiled to a dll right? Another thing is that in localhost the site was working in a folder and not directly in wwwroot (in a folder called even). So when i was to import my custom made namespace it was referenced as Even.MyNameSpace, but normally i compile it to a dll and do it directly.
Another thing is that i tried compiling it to a dll. Visual Studio tools and then VS.net Command prompt, followed by vbc /t:library myVbFile.vb but it couldnt compile. It couldnt find the namespace i imported. It cant even import namespaces like System.Xml etc.
Someone please help. Please tell me if i am not clear as this is a very basic problem.Lots of problems and possible issues here. To start with, you'd have to explain what "didn't work" means. Have you tested a very simple Hello World! ASPX file, with no code behind, to make sure you understand the basics of working with VS and your web host?
Jeff
Well I uploaded a file which on clicking over a button shows the contents of an XML file.
I made a namespace and added a class in it to access and XML file. In my pages code behind i use this class to return the data. (the xml contains values coupled together). The class has many function like getData1, getData2 etc.
The Class for reading the XML throws a user created exception (that i made) if no data existed, else it threw the usual exception. This is caught by the page in which i have called the xml reader class. If its the user exception it simply writes that no data was found else it writes the exceptions text. So initially as i said when i uploaded it gave a message written "The remote server returned an error: (404) Not Found." as the exception's message. I then uploaded all the files i mentioned alongwith the assemblyinfo. But it still didnt work. Then i uploaded a new file which had a "page loaded" string in its page_load, but the changes were not affected. I rebuilt the project in VS and then uploaded the new resx, aspx.vb and aspx files, but to no avail.
I have worked on Dreamweaver and without code behind. Later i tried to compile the VB file but the VS .net command prompt compiler gave me that error. My VS by default creates page with code behind only. Can this be changed? Actually i want to create my own class and compile it to a dll and then make the page inherit from the class from the dll.
I have another question. I had named my project even in VS and then started working in the folder even in the wwwroot. Now i uploaded the whole folder onto the site in a folder placed in the root with the same name as even. Made it an IIS application but still the code doesnt run. It started workng after i uploaded the aspnet_client to the even folder.
Can anyone tell me how i can deploy this to my root? Moreover when i change any file what all files do i need to upload again? Is there a way to prevent VS to automatically creating a page behind as i would like to put all my classes into a dll and then use them as page behind. Moreover when i build the project are the .vb files automatically compiled to dll?
I have one basic question. How do we deploy our VS projects to our web site? I am not able to get any file to work on the website. I have no problems at my own computer and everything is working fine. I am sure a lot of people here can teach me how to deploy VS projects? What all changes etc have to be done?
Im no expert here but if you compile this as a release instead of a Debug build and then create a "Web Setup Project" under the New Projects and then choose Setup and Deployment Projects. Then you can "install" the website to your webserver.

I just noticed another thing in your post. If you are going to want your classes in a DLLs separate from the main project then you need to create a class library and place all of your classes that you would like to keep separate in there and then just create instances of those classes within the library in the other project.

As you suggested i created a class library. Then i made a file in some Namespace and put in a class. After building it i copied the dll from the bin folder to my sites bin folder. But still i couldnt use the class in my aspx pages. If i compile the same class through command line
vbc /t:library /out:MyClass.dll SomeClass.vb
then it works.
Moreover one of my classes had Imports System.Xml in it. when i build it, it works but when i use the above command line statement in the VS.net Command prompt i get an error saying the file couldnt be found. I dont know what to do and am stuck.
I tried adding the class library to my project, but still cant use it. How do other people generally implement code behind without using VS? I want to create classes in VS but use them in my aspx pages which i make in Dreamweaver.
