Newbie - Problem Loading SLN files.
I am having a problem that is driving me crazy.
I have Windows 2000 Professional, Visual Studio Professional, IIS installed
and running...
I am reading ASP.NET Developer's JumpStart by Paul Sheriff and Ken Getz.
I've downloaded the examples and now want to try some of them out.
In VS, I go to the File Menu and Select, Open Solution. I go to the
directory that the installer put the book's files and select the SLN file.I
then get the following error:
Unable to get the project file from the Web Server. Unable to open Web
Project 'JumpStart/VBLanguage.' The Web 'JumpStart/VBLanguage' located
on server 'http://localhost/' does not exist.
In IIS, their is a virtual directory for JumpStart. I've tried creating one
for VBLanguage but I still am getting errors.
I then tried just opening the Project. I had to use a URL
(http://localhost/jumpstart/vblanguage/vblanguage.vbproj) and I can open it,
but I get the message: "You do not have permission to make changes to this
document. Do you want to open a read-only copy?"
I answer Yes, but I still get the error that it is unable to get the project
file from the Web Server.
I can't reproduce exactly what I did before, but at one point I think I made
my own Solution file and added everything, but I could not view any of the
pages in Design view.
I just want to learn this stuff. I've spent too long just trying to open a
file and no time reading and learning. It had been very frustrating (thanks
for letting me vent).
Thank you for any help you can provide.
-RobI think you need to contact either Paul Sheriff or Ken Getz for your answer.

Maybe, but I installed it on a different PC with no problems. So I figured
it was a Microsoft problem, not Paul Sherrif's or Ken Getz's.

Hi,
I'm a newbie in programming. I have started working on ASP.Net this week. My OS is Windows XP Profesional. IIS 5.1, Visual Studio 2005. I am trying to build a simple user login system from the book "ASP.Net 2.0 Everyday Apps for DUMMIES". I followed every instruction written in the book. Everything is working well apart from sending email to the user while registering or changing password.
Can anyone help me please. Thanx in Advance,
Portion of webconfig file is below:
<system.net>
<mailSettings>
<smtp>
<network host="localhost" port="25" />
</smtp>
</mailSettings>
</system.net>
The error I'm getting is below.

First, define "doesn't work." Describe symptoms, behaviors, error messages,
etc.
Second, this is the ASP.Net newsgroup. You want the ASP newsgroup,
microsoft.public.inetserver.asp.general.

newbie asp.net project question...
Then I created a new asp.net project in VS. The problem that I have is this: when I compile and run the project, it's link looks like this
http://localhost/MyWeb/Default.asp
which means that if in Default.aspx I put a link to "\login.aspx" for example, it will fail, because "\" is "/localhost/". I need to have the root represented by the entire link. Therefore "\login.aspx" should point to "http://localhost/MyWeb/login.aspx" instead of "http://localhost/login.aspx". If it doesnt how am I supposed to work on different projects?? If I need to work on 3 different sites I need each of them to have it's own root..
How can I do that? Thank you
andrewHey Andrew,
Are you talking about Server.MapPath??

No, what I mean is, on my development machine the projects are arranged like this
http://localhost/MyWeb1/ (MyWeb1 is the virtual dir setup in IIS
http://localhost/MyWeb2/ (MyWeb2 is the virtual dir setup in IIS
So, to refer a file
http://localhost/MyWeb1/Default.asp
When I deploy the finalized web application on the web it will be something like this
http://some.server.com/Default.asp
If I put a link in Default.aspx that reads: href="http://links.10026.com/?link=\Login.aspx", it will work on the deployed version, as
http://some.server.com/Login.asp
exists, but on the development machine it will not work because it will point to
http://localhost/Login.aspx, instead of http//localhost/MyWeb1/Login.asp
This means that either I have to deploy it as http://some.server.com/MyWeb1/ (which is not cool at all) or I have to work with ALL my projects directly in the root, which again is not good..
How can I do this
than
What are you using to develop? As using "/file.aspx" should work on both
server and dev machine.

I use VS2003 and Framework 1.1.
It doesn't work as you say. For instance if I have an image href = "\Images\image1.gif
If I place the file here: c:\Inetpub\wwwroot\MyWeb\Images\image1.gif, it doesnt work. But if I put it here
c:\Inetpub\wwwroot\Images\image1.gif it works.
This is all on the dev machine. This means that "\" = "c:\Inetpub\wwwroot" when I really need it to be "c:\Inetpub\wwwroot\MyWeb". However, after researching a little bit on the web it looks like what I want is not possible. This means that I can only work on 1 project at a time or combine ALL projects in "c:\Inetpub\wwwroot"...
:-
What are you using to dev? As I have been doing this for a few years and
this "/page.aspx" should be fine for test and server.

NEWBIE has a prob
framework 1.1. I run Win XP Pro SP1 and IIS 5.1.
The problem:
I 've tried to run two different .aspx files and the browser displays simple
html (text) but no forms or anything like that. IE keeps giving this error
"Line: 4, Char:6, Error:Expected ';', Code:0", but I've checked the code and
is fine. Everything works ok with good old ASP.
Any idea what this annoyance might be?
Thank you all in advance.You may need to repair your IIS mappings.
To do this, run the following command:
aspnet_regiis.exe -i

Newbie help! importing custom namespaces in IIS
//test.cs
using System;
namespace tester{
public class testclass {
public String myString;
public void setMystring(){
myString = "hello world";
}
public String getString(){
return myString;
}
}
}
You help would be appreciated!
Thanks
abzI assume you aren't using Visual Studio .NET
You answered your own questions:
compile the cs file:
cs /t:library testclass.cs
and put it in your application's bin directory.

Newbie IIS6/ASP.net problem
development. I then chose the Application server role and loaded IIS 6
making sure to enable ASP.NET while I was doing it. I then installed Visual
Studio.NET 2003. Today I was loading some sample files from a C# book I got
from Microsoft Press and got this error from the Windows Development
Environment:
"The Web server reported the following error when attempting to create or
open the web project located at the following URL:
'http://Localhost:/aspnetsbs_cs/Chapter_01/'.'HTTP/1.1 400 Bad Request'.
When I loaded the same sample files on my Win2k Pro machine it came off
without a hitch. I have scoured Microsoft Technet but I seem to be unable to
find anything to explain this. So far I have not been able to get any
classic ASP or ASP.NET pages to run.
If anyone can give me some pointers I would really appreciate it. I imagine,
as usual, that the answer is quite simple. Obviously I am very inexperienced
with IIS and .NET. I usually do MSAccess programming.If nothing runs, open the IIS Administration Console on the Server. Expand
the local computer node, and click on Web Service Extensions. In the right
pane, make sure Active Server Pages and ASP.NET are set to "Allow". Windows
Server 2003, as part of the new security initiative, now disables many
things by default.

Thanks but the Server console is set to "Allow" for both Active Server Pages
and ASP.NET. I'm still at a standstill without a clue.
Perhaps bagging the idea of using Win2k3 and IIS 6 altogether and going with
Windows 2000 server would be better, no? The site I am eventually going to
set up will be in an intranet setting so security shouldn't be too much of a
problem (famous last words).

Hi Michael,
Please go to IIS configuration->Default web site->Properties->select "web
site" tab. There is a IP address setting. Did you set it to an IP address?
If so, please change it back to (all unassigned).
If this setting is set as an IP address, then localhost(127.0.0.1) can't be
resolved by IIS and so you couldn't visit any site in http://localhost.
Please post here if the problem is not resolved. Thanks.
Best regards,

I did as you said and now the error I get is the same except instead of
saying 'Bad Request' it says 'Service Unavailable'. During the course of
trying to get the webserver up and running, I got an error page in IE with
those words on it on several occasions but all the indications that I could
see led me to believe that the website was running.
Sorry to truncate but the thread was getting quite long.

Newbie IIS6 question: How to delete items from the Default Application Pool?
When I launch IIS Manager and expand Application Pools >> DefaultAppPool,
there are some Default Applications, and also a bunch of stuff that is
residue from practice web applications created from Visual Studio.Net:
WebApplication1, WebApplicationi2, etc.
How do I delete this stuff (the defunct WebApplication1, etc) and why is it
still there?
Thanks in Advance.The application details are stored in the IIS Metabase. You can use the
Metabase Explorer to delete them if they no longer exist.
If you delete the folder hosting a web application directly off the file
system (eg via Explorer), IIS doesn't know that, and the web application
remains defined in the metabase.
Instead, you should use the IIS Manager to delete the web application root
first (properties of the web app, and click "remove" on the directory tab,
where the Application Root settings are), then delete the folder off the
hard disk.
Metabase Explorer is available from:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...&DisplayLang=en
Cheers

Outstanding! I appreciate the clear and concise reply with a link to the
resource I needed. It worked great, and now I know how to avoid the problem
in the future. Thanks for the help!
newbie looking for a good starting point
looking for a good place to start - a fairly large sample project (maybe
even one with a proper middle tier) to get myself up to speed. Any
suggestions?

Windows Forms is quite different than ASP.NET, and just using
VB.NET for Windows development, although it's a big help,
doesn't do anything for familiarizing yourself with the web classes
in the Framework, which is your main task now.
First, you should determine whether to start
with ASP.NET 1.1 or with ASP.NET 2.0.
For ASP.NET 1.1, start at
http://samples.gotdotnet.com/quickstart/aspplus/
For ASP.NET 2.0, start at :
http://beta.asp.net/quickstart/aspnet/Default.aspx
That will give you a the background you'll need to be
able to understand a "fairly large sample project".
Then, after you understand the basics ( it shouldn't take you too long
to browse through, run and see the source for the examples there,
download the starter kits and dissect them.
Starter Kits for ASP.NET 1.1 :
http://www.asp.net/Default.aspx?tabindex=8&tabid=47
Starter Kits for ASP.NET 2.0 :
http://www.asp.net/vwd/starterkits...ndex=4&tabId=46
After you're done with those, you'll be ready for a large project.
If after all this, you still think you can dive into a fairly large
project without practicing any basic skills, I'd suggest you
download and install the Community Server Forums :
http://communityserver.org/forums/default.aspx
They use a fairly large smattering of specialized components.
user management routines, data-handlig, security, etc.,
all handled according to ASP.NET best practices.
Dissect that source code. It's a valuable teacher.
